Blake Richards at the University of Toronto is doing some interesting work correlating neocortex spike data and ANNs. His recent paper “Deep learning with segregated dendrites” presents a computational model of the cortical pyramid neuron that integrates feedback from apicals. Disclaimer, I have not yet read the full paper, I just met him today at NIPS. He has not heard of HTM and Numenta, but is excited to learn more!
