Work to date has shown that homologous populations of neurons are found in the avian/reptilian dorsal ventricular ridge and the mammalian neocortex. Thus, neuronal specification (e.g., morphology, transmitters, and connections) and lamination are two independent events contributing to the evolutionary origins of the mammalian neocortex.
