Demonstration of Discrete Place-Defined Columns in the Cat SI

This paper was referenced in The columnar organization of the neocortex and I found a copy.

favorov1990.pdf (1.8 MB)

It describes hexagonally-shaped cortical columns in cat somatic cortex.

This is the first time I am seeing this.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I did a quick scan and it is very interesting.
I will be giving this a deep read ASAP.

We do terrible things to lab animals.
That said - this reinforces what I have been saying is going on all over the cortex.

One other detail that I find interesting - the mechanism that I postulate is the core of the hex-grid forming L2/3 layer depends critically on the ratio between the inhibitory inter-neurons and mututal-excitatory distances.
If the ratios are different, such as in VI, they work to form a Gabor filter. I would not be at all surprised if there are some other calculation tricks that pop out in tuning the ratio between these components.
