There are many interesting philosophical gems I have read that may be interpreted somewhat mathematically/logically and be used in the pursuit to build an ‘AGI’ or even create consciousness artificially with the help of existing research. They usually ruminate about the workings of the brain and our existence in a way we never think about.
Has there been any formal research or discussions done in this area?

Some people think so.
To the best of my knowledge, while a lot of electronic ink has been spilled on this general concept, not one of those lines has a functioning example to show that the approach works. See Good Old Fashioned AI (GOFAI) for much (unsuccessful) dabbling in the area.
